Justin Bua Thinks You Should Put Down Your Puss Sandwich

"My stools didn’t smell like the decay of a dead rotting animal."

Hip-Hop artist Justin Bua recently made the following video statement for Peta speaking out against eating hamburgers, drinking milkshakes, eating cheese, or enjoying any sort of food that once had a face or came from an animal booby. We were like "how come?"

VICE: You say you went from being a Kentucky Fried Chicken “ghetto kid” to a vegan. When did this happen and how has it improved/benefited your career?

Justin Bua: I was raised as a latchkey kid by a single working mom so when I wasn’t being fed “home-cooked” meals like Stouffer’s TV dinners and Kraft Macaroni and beef I was eating out at fast food joints like McD’s and KFC. When I switched off of poisonous processed foods and onto real foods my world opened up to new dimensions. Not only did I experience genuine foods for the first time in my life, I felt better. Eating a plant-based diet took a lot of the aches and pains away from getting out of bed. Within two weeks my asthma and “acid reflux” completely disappeared. When I took meat, dairy and processed foods out of the diet and added greens, fruits, nuts, and seeds I transformed physically and spiritually.

People say that a vegan’s body odor is far less offensive than a meat eater’s. Do you find this to be true? After how many years of being a vegan do you notice this improvement?

I did notice that. When I went vegan sixteen years ago I also went 100% raw. So I noticed all kinds of changes like my eyes actually became clearer and lighter, my body odor smelled better, and my stools didn’t smell like the decay of a dead rotting animal that rotted through 20 feet of human intestinal track.

Do you find you have more energy now that you’re a vegan?

No doubt. I have waaaaaaaay more energy eating this way. It’s obvious though. When I ate meat and dairy I always felt sluggish. Like I was meat dazed. That’s because we are not designed to eat meat. We are humans, and like roaches or rats we will eat anything that is put in front of us, from a Twinkie that has 39 fucked up ingredients to an animal that has leukemia, tumors, and herpes at the time of slaughter. Well just cook that disease up, throw some BBQ sauce on that bitch, and chew away. Can we survive on that kind of diet? Sure. But is that the best way to live for longevity and well-being? No.

People always say, “Well Eskimos eat almost exclusively animal flesh and they survive”. Yes, that’s because they don’t have access to plants and most are getting arthritis by the time they are in their 30’s. That’s not the optimal diet, that’s just pure survival. Do you want to get premature arthritis? Premature cancer? These are things that in most cases can be avoided. You didn’t just catch cancer because some crazy motherfucker threw it on you while hiding out in a bush. “GOTCHA!” You more than likely beat the shit out of your immune system to the point where you put crazy chemicals in your body and your body is breaking down. If you want to feel better, look younger, and fuck all night long til’ the break of dawn like a rock star well into your 80’s then I suggest putting down the cancer and puss sandwich… I mean that turkey and cheese sandwich and eating VEGAN!

For touring musicians, what are some tips for staying vegan on the road and avoiding eating like crap from truck stops, etc.

Great question. First off bring your ipad or make sure to Google www.happycow.net and you can just punch in your zip code anywhere you are in the world and BAM find all the vegetarian/vegan restaurants that are close by. The other thing that I do is that I like to bring this new super drink mix that super food guru David Wolfe and I developed called “IMMORTAL MACHINE.” It’s all real food ingredients and you can mix with water and or almond milk and it tastes out of this world. It’s great to travel with because it is all super foods and will keep you going with no crash and burn. The drink mix will be out in a few weeks. Get ready to cop it at www.longevitywarehouse.com .

A lot of people try to dispute veganism/vegetarianism by saying things like, “cows and pigs are only here for food.” What would your response be to that?

Well I subscribe to what the ex-rancher, author of “Mad Cowboy” Howard Lyman said, “No animal needs to die for us to live." I don’t believe that animals were put on earth for us to eat. First off it’s disgusting to eat the flesh of another being. I think that we actually have more protein than pigs do. Why don’t we eat humans? Shit, then all of a sudden we're sociopathic Jeffrey Daumer types. When you’re in America it’s considered disgusting and inhumane to eat dog but when you’re in China it’s totally normal. The thought of biting into another animal's flesh at this point of my life is vomitous. This is coming from someone who grew up eating animals so I have perspective from both sides of the fence.

Does being vegan cost more than not being vegan?

Not at all. You can get all the plants, seeds, nuts, and condiments that you need super cheaply at your local farmers market. Now if you try to eat out at the expensive vegan spots vs. eating fast foods of course it’s going to cost more BUT in the end you’ll end up spending more in the long run on your medical bills if you eat fast food.

Where are your favorite places to buy groceries?

I live in LA so I LOVE going to farmers markets. I say that if I have to break it down I buy 70% of my food at farmers markets, 10% of the super foods from online, and the other 20% of foods at spots like Whole Foods or local health food stores.

Do you think it’s easier to be vegan in LA as opposed to NYC?

I do but in truth there are more vegan options in NYC because there are more people. But we have the best produce in the world coming through to Cali so you can’t beat that. I pick lemons, avocados, and oranges from my neighbor’s yard and they are the best EVER!

Are you at the point now where you look at meat and just want to scream?

Ten years ago I would look at meat and my mouth would water. Like a heroin addict who sees heroin and jonesing for a hit. Now I look at meat and it just looks so foreign to me. Sometimes I think I wonder what that animal’s life was like. Did she/he have a family? Was she tortured before being murdered? Was she fed antibiotics? Steroids? Shot up with hormones? What kind’ve life do you have if you are put here to be enslaved, tortured then murdered? Sad.

Well, now I'm depressed. (And yet still oddly craving a hamburger.)
