Tradies and Miners Work Longer Hours Than Anyone Else

Results of the 2016 Census are out, and miners are the overtime kings.

Are you a tradie? Or a miner? Do you think your office worker mates are soft and lazy? Well according to the 2016 Census results released Monday, you're pretty much right.

Census 2016 found that miners, primary industry workers, and construction workers (in that order) do more overtime than anyone else in the country. Around half of all miners regularly work more than 50 hours a week, 35 percent of fisheries and forestry workers do the same, and a quarter of all tradies.

At the other end of the spectrum, only 19 percent of those in "the professions"—meaning doctors, lawyers, rich people, etc.—are regularly working overtime. Cliches about the public service were also validated, with only 11 percent of people in governmental bureaucracy working after hours.

People aged 45 to 54 are the most overtime-laden age group in the country, collectively making up 38 percent. And only 14 percent of 25 to 29 year olds have the same work ethic.

Another finding, equally unsurprising in its own way, is how more people are now working part time. Five years ago, 32.5 percent were in part time employment. That number has now risen to 34.6 percent. And while it's nice to think that says something about people adopting a healthier work/life balance, it probably says more about the casualisation of the workforce.
